Q&A: Meg Mac

Being picked up by Triple J and Triple J UnearthedMEG MAC’s (Megan Mclnerney) ‘Known Better’ is an unexpected soul jam that getting more and more play on the airwaves, and here is a chat with the girl herself.

So Megan, your a Sydney sider who left home at 18 and moved to Perth. What was the story behind the move to WA?

I did a year of uni in Sydney after school which I didn’t like at all but it made me realise I just wanted to sing all day. So I made the big move to Perth and went to uni over there. I think it is good studying away from home, I was the Megan that no one knew, it was fun.

I’ve read that you studied for 4 years in Perth. What did you study? and how did those studies effect how you write music?

I studied music in Perth, I think studying forced me to work on songs and other things that I otherwise wouldn’t have worked on or finished. Being inspired and learning new things everyday for the last few years has effected my music as well all the amazing people and friends I got to meet and sing with. Perth was a lot of fun for me.

Your new track called ‘Known better’ has been getting some positive feedback on Triple J and getting spins on ABC online. You said that you have done some stupid things and those times inspired the song. Care to share any of those things?

I am so happy that people are listening to the song. I guess it is a mix of everything stupid I’ve done, when you know you shouldn’t do something but you do it anyway, it makes things much more exciting. But I will keep my regrets a mystery!

The track is heavily influenced by old school Motown and Soul. Who are some of your favorite musicians who inspire you?

I still get a surprise every time I listen to Sam Cooke sing, he just sounds so good. There’s not much Motown I don’t like, I feel like it was designed to make people happy. There are so many influences, I think I fall in love with people’s voices.

Lately, I am obsessed with Frank Ocean, James Blake and Hiatus Kaiyote.

For those of us who don’t know much about (favorite musicians influence) Is there one record that we should buy to get us started?

I would definitely recommend my Dad’s greatest hits of the 60’s, 70’s collection! You will always find something you like.

You recently played Tropfest in the Domain in Sydney. Playing with the likes of Clubfeet, Kate Miller-Heidke and RüFüS. How was your set? and who was a standout on the day for you

Playing Tropfest was so exciting and it was my first gig in Sydney so it was extra special for me. It is such a cool event, I loved all the live music and all of the films too. I was very pleased to be a part of it this year.

I sat on a picnic blanket with my friends right at the front and watched Kate Miller-Heidke as the sun was setting. It was perfect.

So Richard Kingsmill (triple J) said that ‘Known better’ is a “classy and classic sounding track” Do you think that you will stick to this sound or are we to expect that you might delve into electronica or even funk?

This sound seems to be what is coming out of me for the moment. But I am excited to see what happens after I get it all out of my system.

Being only 22 years of age what are some of the things that you want to accomplish by 30?

I don’t like thinking about growing up but I know I want to sing all the way to 30. I want to live in some more cities, Paris definitely. And then all the proper adult stuff, a house and I want a Great Dane. But mainly the singing stuff.

If you were stuck on a dessert island and you could only have one instrument, one companion and one source of food. What would you bring?

Potatoes, my future Great Dane and I would learn how to play guitar to pass the time.

Lastly, 2013 has started with a bang for you! What are we to expect from you this year

I am loving 2013 so far, I’ll be releasing some more music and working on an EP this year. And I will start doing some live shows for people to come and watch!
